Sinus Lift — Restoring Lost Bone Volume
Sinus Lift for Dental Implants at SLclinic
Dental implants at SLclinic can help you restore your smile and enjoy your favorite foods with confidence.
The experienced implant surgeons at SLclinic use modern implant systems and advanced surgical techniques to restore missing teeth. One of the key requirements for successful implant placement is having sufficient bone volume in the area where the implant will be placed. When there is not enough bone, additional bone may need to be restored before or during implant placement.
A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is one of the procedures used to increase bone volume in the upper jaw and create adequate support for dental implants.
During a sinus lift, the implant surgeon carefully accesses the maxillary sinus, gently elevates the sinus membrane, and places bone grafting material beneath it to increase the available bone volume.
Before a sinus lift, your dentist or oral surgeon will evaluate the health of your maxillary sinuses. A history of sinus surgery or certain conditions affecting the sinuses may affect whether the procedure is appropriate. A CBCT scan is used to evaluate the available bone volume, anatomy, and density, as well as the position of nearby tooth roots when present.
At SLclinic, our experienced specialists carefully plan each procedure based on your individual anatomy and treatment needs.
Types of Sinus Lift Procedures
Open Sinus Lift
An open sinus lift, also known as a lateral window sinus lift, is generally used when there is significant bone loss in the posterior upper jaw.
The surgeon creates a small access window through the side of the upper jaw to reach the sinus. The sinus membrane is carefully elevated, and bone grafting material is placed into the space beneath it. Depending on the individual case, a barrier membrane may be used before the surgical site is closed.
Once the graft has healed and sufficient bone has developed, the area can be evaluated for dental implant placement. In selected cases, an implant may be placed at the same time as the sinus augmentation.
Closed Sinus Lift
A closed sinus lift, also known as a transcrestal sinus lift, is a less invasive technique generally used when there is sufficient existing bone height for the procedure.
The surgeon accesses the sinus through the implant site and carefully elevates the sinus membrane. Bone grafting material may then be placed beneath the membrane to increase bone volume. When appropriate, the dental implant can often be placed during the same procedure.
Post-Operative Recommendations After a Sinus Lift:
- Avoid blowing your nose for approximately 3–4 weeks, or as directed by your surgeon
- Avoid scuba diving and activities that create significant pressure changes
- Avoid air travel for the period recommended by your surgeon
- Avoid very hot foods and drinks immediately after surgery
- If you need to sneeze, do so with your mouth open to minimize pressure on the sinus
- Avoid strenuous physical activity during the initial recovery period
Contraindications
Depending on your individual health and medical history, a sinus lift may not be appropriate in certain circumstances, including:
- Uncontrolled or active medical conditions
- Blood clotting disorders
- Certain cardiovascular conditions
- Certain immune system disorders
- Active sinusitis or significant nasal inflammation
- Recent surgery involving the nasal cavity or maxillary sinus
- Certain tumors or other conditions affecting the treatment area
Every SLclinic patient is unique and requires an individualized treatment plan.
At SLclinic, bone augmentation procedures are planned using high-resolution CBCT imaging, allowing our specialists to carefully evaluate the anatomy and plan treatment according to the patient's individual needs.
